Rachel Yankey sets England on path to women's World Cup play-offs
England 3-0 TurkeyThe Arsenal winger Rachel Yankey celebrated her 100th cap with a goal to set England on their way to a comfortable victory that ensured they would top their World Cup qualifying group and earn one of the top seedings for the play‑offs that decide which European teams will go through to next year's finals in Germany.Yankey was captain for the night in front of an enthusiastic Bescot Stadium crowd of 5,457, more than 1,400 above the average Football League One attendance of the host club Walsall last season. She had a suitably inspired evening and her runs and crosses triggered constant danger in a Turkish defence that was often packed but always penetrable.Poor deliveries into the penalty area by the 30-year-old winger's team helped keep the score down, though there were also a number of excellent saves by the goalkeeper Duygu Yilmaz and weak finishing by an England team minus its most prolific striker, Kelly Smith. Smith was rested for a match where victory[...]

Blackburn Rovers set to sell Grella to Turkey
Blackburn Rovers Galatasaray Blackburn Rovers are reportedly set to sell midfielder Vince Grella to Turkish club Galatasaray. The Australian international has already been heavily linked with the Istanbul club but a potential deal fell through earlier in the European summer. Now, UK reports are suggesting the club which acts as home to Grella’s Socceroos teammates Harry Kewell and Lucas Neill, have returned with better terms and a deal could very well be done. It is believed that the Lancashire club will sell injury-prone Grella for around £2million ($AUD3.4m).   Need your Blackburn Rovers news fix? Click here for all Rovers news and transfer rumours.

Stoke boss praises Tuncay for improvement in fitness levels
Middlesbrough Stoke City Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has lauded Turkey striker Tuncay for improving his fitness levels over the summer. The 28 year old joined the Potters from Championship side Middlesbrough for £5m in August 2009, but he struggled to make a real impact, starting just 13 Premier League games. "Tuncay's worked hard in pre-season and he's looked sharp," Pulis told BBC Radio Stoke. "He looks a lot fitter than he was last year." "It's very important that people recognise that we are overloading the players at the moment," added Pulis. "We're not preparing as we would do if it was a league game and we're making sure that they get a lot of work done."   Need your Stoke City news fix? Arsenal women’s star set for 100th England cap
Arsenal World Cup Arsenal’s Rachel Yankey could win her 100th England cap in Thursday's Women's World Cup qualifier against Turkey at Walsall's Banks's Stadium, reports BBC Sport. The 30-year-old winger will become only the second player - after ex-Doncaster Belles defender Gill Coultard - to reach the century mark for England. Yankey, who was awarded the MBE in 2006, said: "It will be amazing. "It will be right up there with the biggest highlights of my career." She added: "On Thursday I won't be thinking of my 100th cap, I'll be concentrating on helping England to win a game that can take us closer to the World Cup finals. "It will probably mean more to me when I've finished playing." Victory would confirm England coach Hope Powell's team as Group Five winners and earn a top seeding for the qualifying play-offs that all European teams - host nation Germany apart - must get through to reach the 2011 finals.

Pulis hails 'sharp' frontman
The Turkey international joined the Potters from Championship side Middlesbrough for £5m 12 months ago but failed to make a real impact in a Potters shirt last term. However, he hit an impressive hat-trick in the 6-0 friendly win over Newcastle Town over the weekend and Pulis has been impressed with his application during pre-season. "Tuncay's worked hard in pre-season and he's looked sharp," the Stoke boss said on BBC Radio Stoke. "He looks a lot fitter than he was last year." On the general fitness levels of his squad, he added: "It's very important that people recognise that we are overloading the players at the moment. "We're not preparing as we would do if it was a league game and we're making sure that they get a lot of work done."
