World Cup Wonders # 1: Toto Schillaci, Italia 90
Best player in the world… for about a fortnightWorld Cups can have a strange effect on players, just ask the slightly softer-around-the-middle of the two Ronaldos. He had a really weird one once. Kaka: More to Real Madrid than Ronaldo
Kaka believes back-to-back victories is proof there is more to Real Madrid than Cristiano Ronaldo. For Ronaldo's two-match suspension, Real have beaten Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor and Espanyol last Saturday. "It's always important to score. It helps the team and builds mutual trust," said Kaka, who was on the scoresheet against Espanyol. "I feel better every day and also on the field. The groin was my first problem because it did not allow me to express myself as I wanted. "Cristiano (Ronaldo) is essential, but a team cannot rely on a single player. We play better every week that goes by and we want to do more and more. "We cannot lose any points. We must continue to win."

Evra believes a selfish Rooney is good for Man Utd
Patrice Evra claims Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney has matured into a more selfish player, and with 23 goals this campaign it is to the benefit of the Reds. "Wayne understands what the team needs and we're seeing what a great player he is," said Evra in the Manchester Evening News. "He is a world class player and is getting his just deserts because now he is more mature, he concentrates more on staying around the box. "He's not lost any desire to still press the ball and things like that, but now he knows he needs to score a lot of goals because Ronny [Cristiano Ronaldo] has gone and he needs to score more. "He's changed his mentality. Now he wants to score, he wants to be a killer and that is very important for us."   Click here for more Manchester United news and gossip

Man Utd fullback Evra: Rooney has become a killer
Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra has described teammate Wayne Rooney as a "killer". His goal against Portsmouth was Rooney's 12th goal in 15 games against Pompey for Everton and United. More importantly, his 23rd of an outstanding campaign means he has matched his best haul with a third of the season to go. Evra summed up the transformation in the striker, saying: "He knows he needs to score a lot of goals because Cristiano Ronaldo has gone. He's changed his mentality - he wants to be a killer."

Manchester United 5-0 Portsmouth | Premier League match report
The Great Pompey Turkey Shoot done and dusted, now for the real test of Manchester United's resurgence. Their next three matches are away, against Aston Villa, Milan and Everton, after which the true capability of a team dangerously reliant on one man should be apparent. For Wayne Rooney, still only approaching his peak at 24, this is fast becoming an annus mirabilis. England's best footballer now has 23 goals this season – 21 in 24 games in the Premier League, where he has scored nine in his last seven appearances – and he must be a shoo-in for any player of the year award. The thought of what United, or England, would do without him, should he of the Golden Boot get injured, must horrify Sir Alex Ferguson and Fabio Capello. Horror of horrors, they might both be forced to turn to Michael Owen.Patrice Evra, United's only ever-present in the Premier League, has seen more than most of Rooney this season, and believes the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo has seen the forward blossom[...]

Man Utd captain Neville: Nani needed time. He could be anything
Manchester United captain Gary Neville has told Nani he could be anything. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits Nani has always been backed by his teammates since arriving at Old Trafford. And Neville told the Sunday Times of Malta: "Nani's performances in the past few weeks against Hull City, Manchester City and Arsenal have been absolutely fantastic. He has incredible ability, and when he performs like he did against Arsenal he is unstoppable. "Players like Nani, who have such high skill levels, rely on confidence. We hope the level of performance, commitment, determination and skill he has shown in the last few games can be maintained until the end of the season because he's a match winner for us. "I think Nani can be anything he wants to be. People expect so much from young players, but it sometimes takes time. It took time for Cristiano Ronaldo to settle in at United as well."

Can Real Madrid Spend Their Way To Football Supremacy?
There is a price for everything. Sir Alex Ferguson declared indignantly in December that he wouldn’t sell the Real Madrid mob a virus, not to mention his crowning jewel, Cristiano Ronaldo, but when an astronomical £80 million check is waved enticingly, principles can be swayed.

Chelsea boss Ancelotti: Man Utd’s Rooney right now best in world
Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti rates Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as the best player in the world. The former AC Milan coach has become an instant member of the Rooney fan club, even though the England international’s goals are preventing the Londoners from running away with the title. Ancelotti believes Rooney has taken over from Cristiano Ronaldo as the world’s No.1 player. He said: “United are using Rooney very well in this moment. Every game he proves his quality. He’s a fantastic, fantastic player. “I am surprised because he never drops, he always improves his performance. “It’s a good thing not only for Manchester United, but also for the national team because to have Rooney in this condition is very important for England at the World Cup. Is he the best in the world at the moment? I think yes. At the moment he’s the most decisive player in the world.”

Real Madrid vs. EspanyolManuel Pellegrini will continue to not have the services of Cristiano Ronaldo. An unhealthy Kaka isn’t any better. The Madrid based side did pick up a convincing win against Deportivo La Coruna last weekend and Espanyol being a weaker team this season is good news. A win will be critical in their pursuit of the league trophy as rivals Barcelona are unlikely to lose points.Madrid has been on the headlines frequently this last week regarding the issue over Manchester City’s professionalism and the transfer of Fernando Gago. However, such talks are sure to play zero role in the Santiago Bernabeu side’s performance.Barcelona vs. GetafePep Guardiola’s men welcomes Getafe to Camp Nou, after their own close win on road against Sporting Gijon.Aside from a shocking win over Atletico Madrid recently, Getafe has been far from powerful, scoring only three goals in the last six matches. Real Madrid Ronaldo appeal thrown out
Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo must sit out their clash with Espanyol. Ronaldo will not play against Espanyol on Saturday after Spain's sporting disciplinary committee postponed their decision on Real Madrid's appeal against his two-match ban for a red card against Malaga. The Portugal star, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Friday, was hoping the CEDD would halve his two-match suspension after he was sent off for elbowing Denmark international Patrick Mtiliga in the face. But Friday's announcement means Ronaldo will miss the clash against the Catalan side at the Bernabeu - he also sat out Madrid's 3-1 win at Deportivo La Coruna last weekend - as Madrid look to maintain their Primera Division title challenge. Real coach Manuel Pellegrini said: "Cristiano Ronaldo is a key player but without him we have topped the table and won big games. "This is a good squad with great players and I am pleased with how we are doing."

Portsmouth keeper James: Man Utd striker Rooney better without Ronaldo
Portsmouth goalkeeper David James will do all he can today to keep out Manchester United's man of the moment, Wayne Rooney. Keeper James has already been having sleepless nights worrying if he would ever recover from a calf injury. And now he has to worry about Rooney. James said: "Wayne is a class act and I think he's been world class for a few years now. "I was sure Wayne would score more goals this season with Ronaldo out of the United side. "He facilitated a lot of what Ronaldo did over the last two or three years and it was a matter of time before he started to score more. "Now he has much more of an influence on scoring goals rather than supplying them - and he's bloody good! He can get his goals until March then should save them for the World Cup."
