A-League season reviews - Newcastle Jets
The Newcastle Jets are our next team to be looked at in our series of 2009/10 A-League season reviews. The 2007/08 Premiers improved sharply on their horrendous season last term by qualifying for the finals but things could have been much better if they were able to grind out more positive results at certain stages throughout 2009/10. Check back next week for the review of either Sydney FC or Wellington Phoenix who face off in the Preliminary Final on Saturday. Finished: 6th regular season (knocked out of finals Week 2) Record: Wins – 10; Draws – 4; Losses – 13; Points – 34 Goals 33 Against: 45 Top goalscorer: Matt Thompson (8) What went wrong? Three-straight losses from Round 6 to 8 and four-straight losses from Round 24 to 27 probably cost the Jets a home final where they saluted in seven of their 10 victories. They fact they managed to get to the second week of finals despite finishing sixth shows that a home final could[...]

Wellington’s Daniel wants more responsibility
Wellington Phoenix winger Daniel is hoping he is given more responsibility in the Preliminary Final this weekend. The 30-year old Brazilian-born New Zealander was vital in the Phoenix’s come-from-behind extra time win over the Newcastle Jets on Saturday and would love to start at the Sydney Football Stadium against Sydney FC on Saturday but admits as long as the team wins, he will be happy. "I think I did a good job against Newcastle (as a substitute), but it's better if I start, then I can play more time,” he said. "I think we can go to the final. "It doesn't matter who starts against Sydney. In my opinion, we have the best group in the league because in this match we could have a bench that includes me, Diego, (Eugene) Dadi, (Jon) McKain (back from suspension) and (Michael) Ferrante. "Sydney are a good team with a good coach and it's difficult for us to play away , but we have belief in ourselves." Coach Ricki Herbert admitted[...]

Bridge set to get another start for Sydney FC
Mark Bridge is set to take his good return form into Saturday’s Preliminary Final against Wellington Phoenix. Bridge came back into the starting line-up after five weeks on the sidelines with a toe injury last week to perform impressively against the Melbourne Victory, playing behind the strikers and scoring in the process. Now Sky Blues coach Vitezslav Lavicka is planning to deploy him in a similar role for the clash with the Phoenix which will send the winner into the Grand Final to meet the Melbourne Victory. “He showed he can play that role - I was very happy with his performance after a long-term injury," Lavicka said. "He played very well and physically and mentally he was very strong and, of course, he scored an important goal. "It's a possibility (he will play a similar role in the future) - we still have to replace Steve Corica, and we have a chance to bring in another option from overseas or Australia. At the moment I'm thinking about him [Bridge] as[...]

Wellington Phoenix high on confidence ahead of Sydney clash
The A-League’s ‘buzz’ club Wellington Phoenix are high on confidence heading into Saturday’s Preliminary Final against Sydney FC. The New Zealanders have done things the hard way so far to reach the penultimate match of the 2009/10 A-League season but skipper Andrew Durante says the players are chomping at the bit for the weekend. "We've done it the hard way [surviving extra-time games against Perth and Newcastle] but we're full of confidence and we know that we are a far better team than when we played Sydney before," said Durante. "This time it won't be one-sided. We're on one big ride. The motivation is that we let ourselves down three times against Sydney in the league. "We've changed our formation since. It's a different set-up. "Since Manny [Muscat] started playing as a holding midfielder we've won eight of our past 10 games. “And the other massive positive is Liam Reddy in goals - he's been fantastic." Durante[...]
