| Muscat miss the moment we won it – Sydney’s Bolton |
Departing Sydney FC goalkeeper Clint Bolton knew the moment Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat missed his penalty that the championship was theirs. In the A-League Grand Final on Saturday night, Muscat stood up to take the Victory’s first penalty in the deciding shootout and with a near unblemished record in five seasons of taking spot-kicks, the skipper hit the left upright despite sending Bolton the wrong way. The Sky Blues gloveman, who is off to new club Melbourne Heart next seaosn, admitted he was lucky but knew the moment Muscat hit the bar was the moment his team had become champions. "Yeah, that was the moment. I thought here we go. We are going to win this,” Bolton said. "I didn't see it. I heard it hit the post and I had a quick look and it flashed back out and I thought you beauty, this is our game then." Later on, Bolton saved the penalty of Marvin Angulo that basically won them the title and said he was confident when the Costa Rican stepped up. "I didn't[...] |

| Melbourne’s Thompson out for about nine months |
Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson has been ruled out for the remainder of 2010 with a serious knee injury. The speedy forward was injured in Saturday night’s A-League Grand Final in a challenge with Sydney FC defender Simon Colosimo with scans revealing a ruptured anterior cruciate and medial ligaments in his left knee. The Victory confirmed Thompson would be out for the rest of the year, meaning he would miss the Asian Champions League campaign and most of the next A-League season but the player himself was maintaining a positive outlook. “I'm so disappointed," Thompson said. "Last night was such a big game for the club and the supporters and this year was going to be such a big year with the AFC Champions League and World Cup to come. "But I'm going to come back bigger and stronger. "What doesn't kill you can only make you stronger." |

| There’s nothing unfair about football – Melbourne’s Merrick |
Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick was probably the most disconsolate he has been in football after last night’s Grand Final loss to Sydney FC. The man who had led the Victory to a previously unprecedented two A-League championships was almost in shock as he sat barren-faced in his chair as Sydney’s Sung-Hwan Byun beat goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak to hand the Sky Blues the title after a tense penalty shootout. In the post match press conference, Merrick was asked if he believes the way his team lost, after seemingly dominating the second half of proceedings, was an unfair way to lose. “There’s nothing unfair about football,” the Scot said. “During the game I thought we did well, I thought we created some good chances. Towards the end of normal time I thought we had the chances to score, young Aziz (Behich) on the line, Adrian’s (Leijer) header but overall I thought it was a tremendous effort by the boys but it’s easy to make it[...] |
