| Robben urges Bayern Munich pal Ribery to choose Barcelona over Real Madrid |
Arjen Robben has told Bayern Munich teammate Franck Ribery to choose Barcelona ahead of Real Madrid. The French winger is wanted by both Spanish giants and former Real midfielder Robben says the Nou Camp would be the better option. "If he does not renew with Bayern, it would be better for Frank to go to Barcelona. In Madrid there is a climate that is not right for him," explained former Chelsea winger Robben. |

| Everton determined to secure Pienaar to new contract |
Everton are keen to secure Stephen Pienaar to a new contract. The South African midfielder, 28, will be one of the tournament's poster boys and he has attracted interest from a string of top European clubs, including Bayern Munich. Pienaar has just over a year left on his Everton deal and there have been suggestions he will not start negotiations on a new contract until after the World Cup, says the News of the World. But I understand the two parties have started preliminary talks and the club is confident that an agreement will be in place ahead of South Africa 2010. |

| Man Utd chief Gill: Sir Alex can manage Bayern Munich, Chelsea week |
Manchester United chief David Gill is confident Sir Alex Ferguson will know how to approach their Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich. The two-legged tie will sandwich a massive Premier League game with Chelsea. “We’re playing well and Sir Alex and the players know what to do in the latter stages of this competition," Gill told manutd.com. "We’ve got to be confident we can progress. The Bayern tie is very difficult but if we negotiate that successfully we’ve got a French team in the semis. So it’s looking good. “Without doubt [it looks like a good route to the final]. But this is the best competition in club football so there should be eight great teams in the quarter-finals. We can’t get carried away. One of Sir Alex’s strengths is not to do that. We’ve got to concentrate on that first game, get them back to Old Trafford with an away goal, and hopefully we'll progress." |

| Bayern Munich players excited by Man Utd draw |
Bayern Munich players have welcomed their Champions League quarterfinal draw against Manchester United. Bayern say they go into the game without fear. “The mood among the players during the draw was good,” revealed Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel. “It's a very difficult draw, but a fantastic one too. Manchester are a leading European club, just like Bayern. It’s a shame we’re at home first." Full-back Phillip Lahm is also looking forward to the challenge. “It's a tough draw, a truly big name. We’ve been drawn against opponents who like to play football, which suits us fine. There’s obviously no way we’ll underestimate them. The most important thing is to keep a clean sheet in the first leg at home." |

| Ex-Bayern Munich star Beckenbauer praises new Red Bull Arena |
Former Bayern Munich and New York star Franz Beckenbauer has labelled the new Red Bull Arena as a ‘fantastic’ soccer stadium. The German legend was present at the unveiling of the Harrison, New Jersey venue on Sunday watch the Red Bulls defeat Brazilian club Santos and was delighted with how the stadium feels and looks. It’s a fantastic soccer stadium,” Beckenbauer said. “Also the capacity, I think it’s nearly 30,000, I think it’s perfect… It’s a fantastic arena, it’s a fantastic home for Red Bull.” Beckenbauer was a part of the old New York Cosmos in the mid-70s and commented on just how much the sport had developed in the USA since. “It was fantastic seeing what’s going on,” Beckenbauer added. “Pele was the first in ’75, he came, and the country reacting slowly, then more and more teams and players are coming up. (In) 1977, there was almost no one in the country (who) played the game.[...] |

| Toni convinced Roma title push is on |
Luca Toni is convinced Roma can win the Scudetto after their 4-2 thumping of Udinese. Roma are now just four points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan. Toni, on-loan from Bayern Munich, told Sky Sport Italia: “We are there now and have re-opened the title race. Let’s win them all and then we’ll see what happens. “It was not easy because Udinese are a team who play well and were on form after a good win over Palermo. “We knew they could have made things difficult for us. But we did well in hitting back after they had equalised and netted two goals to see off the match.” |
