Wayne Rooney keen for success in the World Cup
The Manchester United and England striker has set lofty targets for club and country in the coming monthsWayne Rooney was supposed to play only the first half of the Fifa 2010 World Cup console game against the lucky competition winner at the exhibition centre in Earls Court. But the score was 0-0 and, with the contest being beamed simultaneously on the big screens to the two thousand people in attendance, Rooney's competitive streak took over. It always does.Perhaps he was cheered by his opponent's team, Spain, being down to 10 men in the mock World Cup final. Or maybe it was because, as England, he was showing himself to be a pretty good console player. Most footballers are and Rooney, of course, does endorse the game. The Manchester United and England striker insisted that they play on, only it did not quite work out for him. Fernando Torres chipped Spain into the lead and, having seen his virtual self strike the outside of a post when clean through to equalise, Rooney watched Emile Heskey[...]

Sydney’s Aloisi: New Zealand football was determined to get there
Sydney FC striker John Aloisi believes that New Zealand was destined to one day emerge as a genuine commodity. Although the former Socceroo never played against sides from the island nation, whilst in Europe he heard that things in New Zealand were not really up to scratch. With two teams, Football Kingz and New Zealand Knights now defunct, you could argue that the Kiwis were never going to make it until the last 12 or so months where things have changed dramatically. As Sydney prepare to take on the pride of Wellington, the Phoenix, this Saturday in a Preliminary Final, Aloisi says he is not surprised things have worked out the way they have. "I'd hear from players that it was disappointing when you'd go over to Auckland and there'd be less than a thousand people watching," he told NZPA. "The team was never that competitive, it was a team everyone thought they could beat - and did beat. "Then my brother (Ross), when he first signed for Wellington, he told me 'Look,[...]

No Swans move for Posh ace
The 24-year-old Posh midfielder looked set to leave a relegation battle at London Road for the Swans promotion push, but it appears talks between the two clubs broke down on Wednesday when no fee could be agreed. Swans boss Paulo Sousa had wanted Frecklington to cover for the absence of injured trio Ferrie Bodde, Joe Allen and Andrea Orlandi. However he will now have to cast his net elsewhere for reinforcements. Frecklington, who has scored four goals in 35 games for the Championship strugglers, will stay put and try to help in Posh's uphill battle to avoid an instant return to League One.

Survival key for striker
The 20-year-old looks likely to make to USA squad for this summer's bonanza in South Africa but right now all he is concentrating on is the Tigers survival fight over the next ten games. Altidore told the Mail: "Nothing is more important for the city and the fans than us staying in the Premier League. "That is our only challenge right now and that is all we are talking about. The next 10 games for Hull City are crucial and then possibly there is the World Cup for me. "It is an important time in the next four months, so for me I need to take care of business here."

Jozy's future unclear
The on loan USA striker says he is not thinking of anything apart from keeping Hull in the Premiership but he does not know what the future holds for him. He is on loan from Villarreal but it is unlikely that Hull will be able to come up with a deal to make a move permanent and Altidore says he does not know where he will be next year. He told the Mail: "I don't know where I see myself next year. There is so much going on that you can't look past it. "I think England is a great league and would be my preferred choice as this is the best league in the world. "Spain is very close too and has a lot of things which make it a special league. "I'd like to get a chance to play in the Villarreal team, but if not we'll see what happens. "But my personal future can go on hold. I am here to do a job and that is to help keep this team up."

Holland coach Van Marwijk worried Premiership turning Man City’s De Jong into hard-man
Holland coach Bert van Marwijk has warned Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong he must rein in his tackling on the international stage. Van Marwijk told De Jong he will have to tread carefully in South Africa this summer after he broke the leg of Bolton’s USA midfielder Stuart Holden in a friendly between the two countries last week. Van Marwijk said: “Nigel plays in England and that is the league where referees allow players to do so much more. But a foul like the one Nigel committed on Holden can cost us the World Cup. “As soon as the game was over, I got hold of him and told him straight. “Maybe he thought this foul was not even as bad as the ones in previous games but he really must get this out of his system.”

Everton must release Donovan back to LA Galaxy
Everton must release Landon Donovan back to LA Galaxy. The Sun says Donovan will play his final game for Everton on Saturday after LA Galaxy refused to budge on the date for his return. The Blues had asked to extend the USA skipper's stay after a hugely impressive three months at Goodison. But the idea was quickly dismissed by Galaxy chiefs and the winger will have to pack his bags after this weekend's trip to Birmingham. LA boss Bruce Arena confirmed: "Landon will be back on March 15."

Columbus Crew come from behind to draw with Toluca
Columbus Crew came from two goals down to record a 2-2 draw with Mexican club Toluca in the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals. Toluca hit the front at Columbus Crew Stadium in the 19th minute through Brazilian midfielder Zinha before Antonio Rios Martinez made it 2-0 a minute before half-time. But 23-year old Crew forward Steven Lenhart hit back twice for the home team with goals in the 65th and 83rd minutes to set up an enthralling second leg tie. Lenhart’s first goal was a sublime piece of skill as he turned in the box after controlling with his chest before half-volleying into the back of the net. Crew will now prepare for the return leg at Toluca’s Nemesio Diez and although they are equal on goals, the Mexicans take an away goal advantage into their home leg. Columbus will welcome back last season’s top goalscorer Guillermo Barros Schelotto and USA defender Frankie Hejduk for the second leg to be played on March 17.
