| Brilliant Messi sends warning to Arsenal |
Lionel Messi sent a warning to Arsenal ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona by scoring a superb hat-trick in a 4-2 victory at Real Zaragoza tonight. It was Messi's second hat-trick in two league games, after he had blown away Valencia in similar fashion last Sunday, and it would have made grim viewing for Arsenal. The victory moved Barcelona level on points at the top of the table with Real Madrid but they remain second on goal difference. Madrid had put the pressure on Barcelona last night by beating Sporting Gijon 3-1 at the Bernabéu.Not only is Messi scoring with remarkable regularity but the quality of his goals is astounding. Zaragoza were no match for the little Argentinian and it took him only five minutes to open the scoring tonight. The old accusation against Messi was that he could not head a ball but he rubbished that notion in the Champions League final against Manchester United last May and did the same against Zaragoza. The forward's second goal, a[...] |

Former Bayern Munich and New York star Franz Beckenbauer has labelled the new Red Bull Arena as a ‘fantastic’ soccer stadium. The German legend was present at the unveiling of the Harrison, New Jersey venue on Sunday watch the Red Bulls defeat Brazilian club Santos and was delighted with how the stadium feels and looks. It’s a fantastic soccer stadium,” Beckenbauer said. “Also the capacity, I think it’s nearly 30,000, I think it’s perfect… It’s a fantastic arena, it’s a fantastic home for Red Bull.” Beckenbauer was a part of the old New York Cosmos in the mid-70s and commented on just how much the sport had developed in the USA since. “It was fantastic seeing what’s going on,” Beckenbauer added. “Pele was the first in ’75, he came, and the country reacting slowly, then more and more teams and players are coming up. |
• Referee was influenced, says Liverpool manager• United deny Valencia cheated to win spot-kickRafael Benítez's dislike of Sir Alex Ferguson manifested itself tonight in the Liverpool manager responding to another damaging setback to his side's aspirations of qualifying for the Champions League by demonstrating more bitterness towards the man who has become his nemesis in English football.Benítez was aggrieved by the penalty that set Manchester United on the way to a 2-1 win, accusing Antonio Valencia of diving, and he referred to his previous accusations that Ferguson placed referees under pressure. "We know about the influence of Sir Alex in everything," he said. "I've seen three replays [from different angles] and the last one was suspicious. See the replay for yourself and how he fell to the ground." Asked whether he was saying it was a dive, he replied: "Yes, I think so. There is contact but the way he fell down – it was strange."Television[...] |
