| Sevilla defender Sergio Sanchez ready to undergo heart op |
Sevilla defender Sergio Sanchez is set to undergo heart surgery in Germany. The 23-year-old left-back, who joined Sevilla from Espanyol last summer, was told in early January to stop all physical activity for the time being due to a heart condition. Sanchez has not played since and after consulting a heart specialist in Hamburg he has decided to undergo a "complicated" operation in the near future. Sanchez said on his club's website: "Dr Sievers has explained the risks involved in having such an important operation, because it's a complicated surgery, but he made it clear that the risks are few compared to the possible benefits that could come about if I have the operation. "There is a good chance that I could be able to continue my career as a footballer if everything goes how we want." In 2007, Sevilla's midfielder Antonio Puerta died after collapsing on the pitch due to a cardiac arrest. |

| FIGC president Abete fears Serie A will lose Champions League spot |
FIGC president Giancarlo Abete admits Fulham's thrashing of Europa League opponents Juventus was a major setback for Italian football. There remains the risk Italy could drop behind Germany in the UEFA ranking and therefore lose its fourth Champions League berth. “The 4-1 at Fulham was an ugly defeat for Juventus, but also for Italian football and the UEFA ranking,” warned Abete. “Now we need Inter to do very well for themselves in the Champions League, but also for Italian football, who risk sliding behind Germany in the ranking. “Don’t forget Germany can still count on three teams in the quarter-finals of the two competitions.” |

| Martin Peters: I can't see us ending 44 years of hurt |
But for one clumsy foul, he would have gone down in history as the man whose goal won the World Cup. Martin Peters's volley into West Germany's net with only 12 minutes of the 1966 final remaining put England 2-1 ahead and should have assured him of that honour. Instead, Jack Charlton was penalised at the other end, the Germans equalised and it was Peters's West Ham colleague Geoff Hurst who was able to earn sporting immortality, not to mention a knighthood, by completing a hat-trick in extra time. |
